Free Note Taking Windows 8 App For Kids: Rainbow Notepad

Rainbow Notepad is a free note taking app for Windows 8 and 8.1 designed with keeping kids in mind. Although not necessarily made for kids and capable of being used by adults as well, the app particularly is appealing to the kids because of the bright backgrounds and cute cartoon faces thrown in here and there. The app is pretty lightweight and is capable of saving and opening note files in rtf and txt formats. The app allows you to change the background color of the editor interface, text color, text size etc. You can also choose to play back what you have typed as the app allows you to listen to your typed text by making use of Microsoft’s text to speech engine which has been beautifully integrated into the app.

Rainbow Notepad is available for free from the Windows App Store.

The major highlights of Rainbow Notepad:

When you launch the app on your device, you will be shown a cute little screen which is the main screen of the app. The main screen of Rainbow Notepad has cute cartoon characters drawn, and to get into the editor interface, all you have to do is to click on the Create New Note star button at the bottom right of the screen as can be seen in the screenshot attached below.

To adjust the text size, you can use the slider just below the editor window. The more you slide it towards the right side, the greater the text size will be. If you recall, I had mentioned in the intro to this article that the app also allows you to change the text as well as background color of the editor interface. This task can be accomplished by clicking on the Choose Background Color and Choose Font Color drop down menus towards the right side of the screen, and then selecting an appropriate color according to your needs from the menu which gets displayed. You can see that I have changed the background and the text color of the editor pane in the screenshot shown below.

You can choose to play back the portion of text that you have written by clicking on the Speak button, and you can also save this audio by clicking on the Save Audio button. You can save the note via the Save button, open a new note via the Open button and choose to create a new note via the New button, all of which are located towards the right side of the screen.
