Windows 8 Speech Recognition And Speech Translation App
SpeechTrans
Not only does the app recognize English, but it also recognizes languages like Turkish, Arabic etc., the only catch being that the language has to be chosen beforehand via the app’s menu. This app is amazing to have meaningful conversations with people in foreign countries, as it can quickly recognize what the other person is saying.
SpeechTrans Translator is available for free from the Windows App Store and cuts the hassle of typing in a portion of text that needs to be translated. Let’s read more about this app now.
Features of SpeechTrans Translator for Windows 8:
When you install and launch SpeechTrans Translator on your Windows 8 or your Windows 8.1 device, you will be presented with a screen which looks like the below screenshot.
You can see in the above screenshot that you have to login to the app to start using it. You can create a free account on the app’s website by clicking on the Create New Account link, and once created, you can use those credentials to log into the app. Once logged in, you will be presented with the interface which looks like the below screenshot.
You can click on the New Conversation button in the above screenshot to start a new translation. Once you do that, you will be taken to the below screen. You need to allow permission for usage of your microphone.
Once that’s done, you can choose the to and from languages from the boxes at the left. Simply click on the language displayed as the heading of each box and you can select the language from a pane that flies in from the right side of the screen.
The upper box is the translate from box and the lower box is the translate to box. Once you click the mic button, you can record upto 60 seconds of audio for the app to recognize it and translate it.
You can tap or click on the screen to stop recording, and via its inbuilt text to speech engine, the app will detect your speech and translate it to the desired language. Once translated, you can play back the audio of the translated language by clicking on the play button in the lower box towards the left side of the screen. If the person you are having a conversation with speaks the language you are translating your speech to, you can click on the mic button in the lower box and the app will detect and convert his language to English (or whatever language you choose).
You can take a closer look at the translated text below.
You can also click on the speech bubble button in each of the boxes at the left side of the screen to type in that particular language and translate it to the other chosen language. This concludes the how-to on using the SpeechTrans Translator app on your Windows 8 device. Overall, this is a great app to have on your device if you are a person who travels often. I absolutely love this app, and would recommend it to anyone!
The verdict…
SpeechTrans Translator is my favorite translation app on the Windows 8 store, hands down! Not only does the app recognize your speech and convert and show it to the desired translated language on the screen, but it also allows you to play back the translated speech in correct accent so it’s more understandable to the people who you are talking to. In a way, this app does all the talking by allowing the others to speak into the app and the app basically translates their speech to your language, and vice versa.
I rate this app a 4 out of 5.
