Total Virus Scanner is a free antivirus application for Windows 8 and 8.1 which allows you to scan suspicious files. The app has a pretty clean interface where you can upload files to the server and then start the virus scan process. The app makes for a good online virus scanning app, the only drawback being that it requires you to stay connected to the net if you wish to scan a file for viruses. The app requires internet access to scan a file, and it runs the file through multiple virus scanning tools and shows you the results of each virus scanning tool on your screen.

Main features of Total Virus Scanner for Windows 8:
When you install and launch the app on your device, you will be presented with the main screen of the app wherein you can choose to upload a file or multiple files, and then these files will be scanned online. The main interface of the app looks like the below screenshot.
As you can see above, you can choose to upload a file by clicking on the Choose File button next to the text field, and once that’s clicked, you will be taken to the file browser screen of your Windows 8 device. From there, simply click on the file that you choose to scan, and click Upload. Once uploaded, the file scanning starts automatically. You can see that the file upload is in progress in the below screenshot.
Once uploaded, you will be presented with the below interface of the virus scanning in progress. You can see that Total Virus Scanner runs your file through multiple search engines, and a green tick next to each entry in the list of search engines indicates that the listed search engine has reported the file as safe.
In the above screenshot, you can see the detection ratio, file name and other information at the top of the screen, and you can see the various search engines that have already analyzed the file via a vertically scrolling list. The verdict:
Total Virus Scanner is a well designed virus scanning app for Windows 8 and 8.1 devices which allows you to scan your files for viruses even if you don’t have a decent antivirus installed on your machine. The app is absolutely free and has no hidden costs unlike a few apps on the Windows App Store. The only major drawback of the app is that it doesn’t run while your system is offline, and hence it’s pretty much unusable if you don’t have an internet connection.
