Learn Alphabets, Numbers, Spellings using Smart Kids:
Level 1: Learn Alphabets
Once you install and launch this app, you will see the start screen with colourful cartoon images and icons for 4 levels at the top right of the screen.
Click the first icon and you will enter the first level. This level shows a screen with a panel at the bottom containing all the alphabets. As you click on an alphabet, it will be shown on the screen as capital and small letter. An image of an object, bird or animal starting with that alphabet will also be displayed, and you will hear a voice pronouncing this alphabet and name of the image associated with it.
Click on the Next button given on the bottom panel to switch to the next alphabet. You can also use right and left headed arrows on the extreme sides of the screen to navigate through the alphabets. Or you can tap on any letter in between on the bottom panel to show it on the screen. The back arrow icon on the top left corner of the screen will take you back to the main screen. You can also click on the ‘i’ icon given on the top right corner of the screen to read instructions related to each level. The back arrow and ‘i’ icons are available at every level on the screen.
Level 2: Match the Alphabet
As you click on the second icon on the main screen, you will enter this level. This level displays 25 random alphabets on the screen, one by one. You have to guess each alphabet by tapping on the matching alphabet on the bottom panel.
If your guess is correct, the voice will confirm it and you will score points. Be careful as you will be given three chances to match the alphabet. If you guess right in first try, you will win 5 points. If you guess right in second try, you will win 2 points. And if you guess right in third try, you will win 1 point. If you still fail to guess right, your choice is over and it will skip to the next alphabet.
You can click on Next button given on the bottom panel to switch to the next alphabet any time. Your score will be displayed on the top right corner of the screen. If you have played it before, the best score will be displayed on the top left corner of the screen. As before, the back arrow button on the top left corner will take you back to the main screen.
Level 3: Match the Number
To enter this level, click on the third icon on the main screen. This level will show 10 random numbers on the screen. Similar to the previous level, you have to match each number with the correct number on the bottom panel and tap on it. The scoring pattern will be same as in Level 2.
Level 4: Guess the Missing Alphabet
To enter this level, click on the fourth icon on the main screen. This level will display 25 random images on the screen. Below each image, you will see the name of the image with a missing alphabet. You have to guess this alphabet and tap on it on the bottom panel. You will be given three chances again, and the scoring pattern will be same as in above two Levels.

My Verdict:
Smart Kids – First Puzzles is a nice, simple and easy to use Windows 8 app for kids to learn alphabets and numbers. Not only will it entertain your kids but it will also teach them basic alphabets and numbers while having fun. However, names of birds and animals associated with a few alphabets are not common, and might be a bit difficult and time taking for the kids to learn. The voice instruction feature is interesting and will keep your children engaged. Definitely a worth trying app.
