Free Note Taking Windows 8 App For Kids: Rainbow Notepad

Rainbow Notepad is a free note taking app for Windows 8 and 8.1 designed with keeping kids in mind. Although not necessarily made for kids and capable of being used by adults as well, the app particularly is appealing to the kids because of the bright backgrounds and cute cartoon faces thrown in here and there. The app is pretty lightweight and is capable of saving and opening note files in rtf and txt formats. The app allows you to change the background color of the editor interface, text color, text size etc. You can also choose to play back what you have typed as the app allows you to listen to your typed text by making use of Microsoft’s text to speech engine which has been beautifully integrated into the app.

Rainbow Notepad is available for free from the Windows App Store.

To adjust the text size, you can use the slider just below the editor window. The more you slide it towards the right side, the greater the text size will be. If you recall, I had mentioned in the intro to this article that the app also allows you to change the text as well as background color of the editor interface. This task can be accomplished by clicking on the Choose Background Color and Choose Font Color drop down menus towards the right side of the screen, and then selecting an appropriate color according to your needs from the menu which gets displayed. You can see that I have changed the background and the text color of the editor pane in the screenshot shown below.
