Free To Do List App For Windows 8 And 8.1: Hot Tasks

Hot Tasks is a free To Do list app for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 devices, designed with the idea of extreme ease of use. Upon launching the app, creating or managing tasks is as easy as clicking on the plus button towards the left of the screen, and your task tile will be created. To add the title to the task tile, simply click on the task tile, and you will be able to type on it, and you can save the typed text after typing by either pressing enter or by clicking outside the tile. You can also create task lists in the same manner (more to that later). Marking a task as complete is easy as well, all you have to do is to tick the checkbox next to the task name that you wish to mark as completed. Hot Tasks is available for free from the Windows Store.

Working with this Free To Do List App…

When you launch Hot Tasks on your Windows 8/8.1 device, you will be presented with an interface which looks like the below screenshot.

main screen

In the above screenshot, you can see a list of task tiles at the left side of the screen, and you can also see the list of Task Lists towards the right. In the above screen, what you are actually seeing is the pre-created Task list and the list of tasks that are already present in the app when you launch it. The tasks are shown on the left side of the screen, and the task lists are shown on the right. Clicking on a task list opens up the list of corresponding tasks on the left. Let’s start off by creating a new task list.

Click on the plus button, next to the Task Lists button, now, you will be prompted to create a new task list. Simply enter the name of the list, whatever you wish for it to be called.

Type in the name in the above box, and click on Add. Your new task list will be created and you will be ready to go!

create new task

When you create a new task list, you will automatically be presented with a blank task tile at the left side of the screen. When you click on that tile, you will be able to add text in that tile, simply by typing. When you have typed the text inside, simply click anywhere outside the tile to save the task tile. You can create as many tasks as you want by clicking on the plus button at the top of the task list. Your completed task list should look something like the below screenshot.

tasks added

You can also add the due date for each of these tasks. Simply right click the task for which you want to add/edit the due date, and you will be shown a control bar at the bottom of the screen which will allow you to do just that! Click on Due Date button in the control bar, and choose the date from the flyout menu. See below screenshot for details.

assign due date

assign due date

Once a due date has been set, the “heat” of the task will be changed, and depending on the due date, the task color will change. You can do this for as many tasks as you want. The end result should resemble something like the below screenshot.

due date assigned, task heat changed

You can then choose to sort the tasks from the control bar by their heat or by their text labels (alphabetical order). Marking a task as complete is easy as well, and all you have to do is to tick the checkbox next to the task that you wish to mark as complete. Then the task will turn grey and you will know that it has been completed. The completed tasks which have been marked grey can then be cleared all at once by right clicking any empty area of the screen and then clicking on the Clear Completed button towards the left side in the control bar.

What’s more, I really love another feature of this app that allows you to move the tasks from one list to another. Simply right click on the task(s) on the left that you wish to move from one task list to another, and you will then be able to drag the tasks to another task list at the right.

Just drop the tasks into the tile of that task list, and the tasks will be moved successfully. This is all that you need to know to get started with using the app. The app also allows you to print the list of tasks via your printer. Simply right click anywhere to access the control bar, and click on the Print button at the bottom of the screen, and you will be able to choose your printer through which you want the printout.

It’s also worthy noting that the printout is formatted to look good on a sheet of paper, and is not merely a screenshot of the app’s interface. If you see the print preview towards the right side in the above screenshot, you will know what I mean. In all, this sums up the how to on using this app on your Windows 8 or your Windows 8.1 device!
